• I’ve seen massage therapists haul massage tables that seem better suited as a barricade in a medieval castle siege.
• I’ve had massage therapists tell me that some days their table feels overwhelmingly heavy to the point where it brings them close to tears and they’re ready to wave the white flag of surrender on their mobile massage practice.
• I often see the recurring question while scrolling through Facebook massage groups: “What is the best and lightest mobile massage table?” frequently asked by massage therapists.
• Massage therapists reach out to me on Instagram and Facebook asking about the massage table I utilize, its weight, and whether I recommend it.

When it comes to massage tables, there are many choices out there, ranging from wooden massage tables to aluminum tables, budget-friendly choices, to premium and luxurious massage tables. 

With the abundance of choices, it can be overwhelming to find the perfect massage table that suits your mobile massage practice.

Therefore, I have written this post to help massage therapists on their journey through the world of mobile massage and to share my discovery of the perfect lightweight massage table for traveling massage therapists.

A mobile massage table will either make or break your mobile massage practice.

Common Mistakes Therapists Make When Buying a Massage Table for Their Mobile Massage Practice

A few mistakes therapists make include:

• Not doing thorough research
• Assuming all aluminum massage tables are lightweight 
• Giving in to impulsive buying

One of the major pitfalls to avoid when buying a mobile massage table is jumping into a purchase without doing thorough research.

I must confess, I am guilty of succumbing to the impulsive buying mistake. 

I neglected to do my research and blindly acquired a second-hand massage table, envisioning it as my trusty backup. 

It was a beautiful sky-blue massage table from a brand that has an impeccable reputation.

It wasn’t until I lugged the massage table up a flight of stairs for the first time that the reality of my mistake hit me like a ton of bricks. 

I strained my back. 

Despite the table being aluminum, its width of 31 inches, along with the extra cushioning, made it unexpectedly heavier than I had anticipated. 

As I rested in bed recovering, I began to research massage tables. From that moment, I swore to scrutinize every detail in my quest to find the perfect mobile massage table. 

Another mistake therapists make is assuming that all aluminum tables are lightweight. That is not the case.

ADVICE: Remember, just because a massage table is aluminum does NOT guarantee the massage table will be lightweight.   

While aluminum tables can be lighter than their wooden counterparts, it’s imperative to conduct thorough research to ensure you will find one that fits your needs.

Ah, the unforgettable lesson I learned from that experience was worth its weight in gold (or, in this case, worth the weight of a heavy massage table)!

Key Things to Consider When Purchasing a Massage Table for Mobile Massage

Weight is undeniably an important factor to consider when purchasing a mobile massage table, but it is crucial to remember that there are numerous other things that warrant careful consideration as well.

It’s important to note that incorporating additional options onto the table can increase its overall weight.

WIDTH

The width of a massage table contributes to its weight. 

From my perspective, I highly recommend opting for a 28 or 29-inch massage table, as the 30 and 31-inch tables are better suited for in-office massage. 

INSIGHT: As a mobile massage therapist, you’ll often find yourself setting up in small spaces, maneuvering through narrow hallways, and frequently lifting the table in and out of your car trunk. Trust me, a wide 31-inch table is far from ideal for mobile massage.

TIP: If a client expresses a need or desire for a massage table as spacious as the one at their favorite spa, my suggestion is for them to consider purchasing a massage table for their own home.

LEATHER

When choosing my current table, one of the options was an upgrade to ultra leather.

Deciding solely based on weight, I chose the leather option because it was 1 pound lighter. I’m delighted to report that opting for the ultra leather, although more expensive, was a fantastic decision, and I’m glad I made that choice.

PADDING

ADVICE: Take a moment and ask yourself: do you really need the additional cushioning on your massage table? Keep in mind that it contributes to the overall weight of the table.

Speaking from personal experience, I purchased my Pisces New Wave II Lite table with the standard cushioning without any additional padding. To my delight, my clients have thoroughly enjoyed it without a single complaint.

An advantage of the innovative design of the Pisces New Wave II Lite massage table is minimal foam is required, thanks to its woven web top. 

TIP: Once more, for clients who desire a spa-like massage experience with lavish cushioning and linens, I often suggest clients consider investing in their own massage table and lines for their homes.

FACE REST

I purchased the Standard Face Rest (which is not adjustable). The Standard Face Rest works fine for me. 

Pisces Pro also sells a Double Tilt Face Rest. The Double Tilt Face Rest is adjustable.

CARRYING CASE

Ask yourself: Is that extra pocket on the carry case really necessary?

As for me, the answer is a resounding no. Loading supplies such as sheets and blankets into the pockets will add to the overall weight you must carry. My solution: I carry a sleek, professional black backpack that houses all my supplies. To lighten the load further, I kindly request my clients to provide their own blankets. 

TIP: When purchasing a carry case, I buy a size up. This makes putting the massage table in the case significantly easier. 

WHEELED CART

Thanks to my Pisces New Wave II Lite massage table, I no longer need a wheeled cart as the table is incredibly lightweight. However, if your practice entails frequent hotel calls or venues that involve walks down long hallways, it may be worth considering the purchase of a wheeled cart for added convenience.

PORTABLE ROLLING STOOL

I also HIGHLY RECOMMEND the Pisces Portable Rolling Stool.

Keep it simple. I refrain from carrying hot towels, hot stones, or overstuffing my backpack with excessive supplies. But hey, if you’re in the mood to go all out and lug around those extra things, by all means, do your thing! It’s your show.

Drawbacks of the Pisces New Wave II Lite Massage Table

1. Head Rest – Only a Pisces Productions headrest will work on your Pisces New Wave II Table. The face rest is not interchangeable with other brands. So, if you lose, damage, or forget your headrest at a client’s location, you won’t be able to simply borrow any random headrest as a replacement.
2. The Price. There’s no denying that the Pisces New Wave II Lite massage table comes with a higher price tag. However, as they say, you get what you pay for, and in my experience, it’s absolutely worth it. The quality speaks for itself, and your back will appreciate the investment in a top-notch table. Think about it this way – you are already dedicated to taking care of yourself and may spend a considerable amount of money on things to keep your body healthy such as gyms, fancy workout gadgets, and other health and wellness activities. So why not add a quality massage table to the list? It’s another valuable investment in your overall wellness.
3. Delivery Time – It took approximately 10 weeks for me to receive my table. This, however, can be seen as a positive aspect, as it reflects the high demand for their massage tables. I purchased my table in 2021. This may or may not be the case now.

Thoughts on Cheap Massage Tables

Oh, pretty please, let me implore you with utmost sincerity: resist the temptation to purchase a cheap massage table. Trust me, it’s simply not worth it. Your discerning clients have a knack for sensing the difference, especially those esteemed high-end and VIP folks you’re aiming to attract.

As a professional, it’s important to present yourself in a professional manner and maintain professional standards. This includes ensuring that your equipment aligns with the level of professionalism you strive to uphold.

Remember, investing in quality pays off in the long run!

Invest in massage equipment that will make you look like the professional that you are!
